Ready And Prime: Favourite Primers for Combination Skin

Gone are the days a proper make-up face was done without the use of a primer. I remember using my first primer; the Rimmel London one with that blue cap and whilst it wasn't the best primer in the world, at the time my make-up felt fresher than before, lasted a lot longer and those little pores around my nose were a lot more diminished. Ever since, I've tried my fair share of different primers hoping to find the "one" and I actually ended up with 4 favs that work pretty well on my skin.
During my teenage phase my skin was dry and flaky; fast forward a few years I now have to deal with combination skin (even throughout winter months) for reasons unknown to me. Combination skin comes with challenges I had not experienced before; my foundation seems to melt off a lot quicker through the day, my pores are more visible and oxidisation of products has pretty much become the norm. Having said, with these guys I find that all of these negatives are lessened, a few more so than the others. So if you too battle with combo skin, check these out.

Benefit POREfessional Face Primer Balm | £24.50
Not the cheapest but definitely my favourite of the bunch. I hesitated for a few months given its price tag but when I finally gave in, I understood why this is raved so highly. Being oil-free, and having that silky smooth texture I knew my skin was in for a treat. I tend to reach for it on special occasions like events and parties and I love the result. My pores are no match for this primer, no matter how huge they are and my make-up looks fresher for longer which is exactly what I look for when opting for this one.

Pros: Oil-free, silky texture, pore minimiser and extends foundation wear.
Cons: Pricey and contains fragrance.
Ideal for: Events & parties.

Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser Primer | £7.99
Not raved as much as the above, but I find this to be quite a good dupe for the Porefessional in terms of pore coverage. It doesn't hold my make-up for as long as the former does, but for daily use this is perfect as the price tag isn't so scary. The matte finish and soft skin I am left with are my favourite features, and with this I always wait a few minutes before carrying with my routine so that primer can set to my skin properly and not blend in with my foundation.

Pros: High-end dupe, matte finish, soft silky texture, pore minimiser and affordable.
Cons: Not as long wearing and needs to be set.
Ideal for: Daily use.

L'Oreal Infallible Mattifying Base Primer £7.99
I talked about pretty much the entire Infallible range in my Gym-Proof Make-Up post so you will know how I impressed I am with them. This primer had just finished at that time of that post, otherwise it would have been there too; I repurchased it since and I love wearing it on days I know I will be hitting the gym hard! Nothing is worse than a patchy looking foundation after a few hours of wear. This helps diminish that and despite being a tad greasy as it comes out of the tube, it does help with the pores situation and oily t-zone.

Pros: Matte finish, pore and t-zone minimiser, sweat-proof and extends foundation wear.
Cons: Feels greasy aft first.
Ideal for: Daily use (gym).

Nivea Men Sensitive Post Shave Balm | £5.35
I decided to jump on the bandwagon and try this thanks to Nikkie. I will start saying that in my opinion, this should not be used alone as a primer. It became so popular due to the the science behind it: this contains glycerin which essentially makes everything stick more easily to your face hence the sticky feeling after you've given it a nice rub all over your face. I do find that my foundation will stay in place the entire day without melting off no matter how oily my complexion may get. However, this does not minimise my pores in any way which is why I always use it alongside another primer applied to my t-zone.

Pros: Extends foundation wear.
Cons: Feels sticky and has a strong after shave fragrance.
Ideal for: Sensitive skin and when used with another primer for best results.

What are your favourite primers? Tried any of these? Let me know below!
Thanks for reading beauties and wishing you a beautiful week ahead!

But gonna add these on my to-try list!

  30. This post is perfection! We have the same type of skin I think, because I completely understood everything you was saying about your skin Pam. So I definitely have tried the L'Oreal Infallible Mattifying Base Primer and it's one of my absolute favourites. I never thought that I'd find another one like it - until I bought the Nivea Men Sensitive Post Shave Balm 2 weeks ago. Oh my goodness, it's a complete game changer and I'm so addicted to it at the moment!!:D

  39. I love the idea of a face primer. However, just like everything else, these products came to Croatia rather late (we still don't have Benefit, as far as I know, and I'm not entirely sure about the other two, either), so I never really used them. However, a few months back I got one from Catrice, and was pretty disappointed, since it did absolutely nothing. My skin is also on the combination side, but it doesn't get too oily, so I don't really struggle with my foundation melting from my face. My concern are enlarged pores, and it did absolutely nothing about them... I am so sorry I didn't get the Porefessional back in London :/ Great post! Thanks for sharing xx
