If I had to pick 2 things I like trying out the most, these would be foundation and mascara. Needless to say, these are what I have the most of in my stash, only losing to eyeshadow because who doesn't have endless amounts of shades anyway?! Which is why, being the foundation addict I am I knew I had to try the newest foundation in the drugstore world. It is no surprise I love everything and anything Maybelline and I have yet to find a product that seriously disappoints me, so their new foundation that claims to be hydrating yet matte was on my shopping list on a recent Boots visit.
The Maybelline Dream Velvet Foundation (£7.99) is the brand's first hydrating matte foundation to give a 100% velvet smooth perfection. It has pigments wrapped in a velvet shield for a soft-matte finish (said to be ideal for normal to combination skin) and natural looking aka medium coverage. If you tried the Dream Satin Liquid foundation, this is said to contain 2x more water than that, aiming to keep the skin looking fresh and hydrated for up to 12 hours. Doesn't this all sound amazing? Well, let's see how I got on with it.
For starters, the closest colour match for me was Ivory, which surprise surprise, is the lightest colour of the range. The foundation comes in 6 different shades in the UK, whilst in the US there are 12 available which is disappointing as the US always seems to have it better than we do. As with other drugstore foundations, it did come out of the tube rather orange looking, but when buffed into the skin I'm happy to report it all turned out to be a pretty close match to my skin tone.
Now onto coverage, it’s true what they say; this yields a medium coverage which is light and hydrating. It is not one for those wanting to hide all imperfections and blemishes as you need something stronger to cover spot scars for example. And I wish coverage could be built up, sadly the more you layer on the cakier it looks. It almost seems like whilst blending the product is just moving away and becoming flakey so less is more with this for sure. I like applying it with the Maybelline Dream Blender (which I LOVE!) or a damp sponge and finishing off with my buffing brush for a natural look for daytime.
And if coverage doesn't bother you too much, the durability will as the 12 hours claim is really pushing it. Every day for work I apply my normal foundation followed by a primer at around 6:30am and will notice some patchy signs at around 3/4pm. With this however, I can see coverage becoming patchy as early as 11am which is not so great, meaning it holds out for around 4 to 5 hours and I honestly expected more. I have combination skin and this is said to work well with that, but on me it is not long lasting. This foundation is no match at keeping my face oils at bay as well as anything else I've tried making me believe it would probably work better on dry to normal skin. Maybe I will keep for those colder winter months and see how it performs then.
In terms of hydration, this does an alright job. Oily skin is tricky to deal with and you may be tempted to dry it out in an effort to control shine, only leading to excess oil. Which is why oily skin needs to be moisturized and moisture = water. Maybelline's attempt to put oil control and water together, aka matte hydrating, in theory it's a good idea, I just wish it would actually work better.

All in all, if you’re looking for light coverage foundation that works well on normal skin, this may be for you, hopefully it lasts longer on you than it did on me. If however, you have acne-prone skin, blemishes to be hidden or anywhere from combination to oily skin, this is not something I'd recommend. Instead I would totally suggest the Estée Lauder Double Wear which is amazing for oily skin and does not budge throughout the day, the L’Oreal Infallible one which is waterproof and sweat proof or the La Roche-Posay BB Blur which works like a charm for those natural non-makeup days. The blender on the other hand, I totally recommend, it's soft enough for buffing products onto the skin and getting that perfect finish.
Have you tried this matte hydrating foundation? What are your thoughts on drugstore foundations?
Thanks for reading beauties!
xoxo
I love the applicator you actually get with it looks cool and easy to apply

Love your clicks, Pam!! The blender looks so beautiful <3 You should try the Maybelline Fit Me foundation for an impressive matte finish.

This is a great review. I'm not one for trying new beauty products if the one I use works for me, but I'm just coming to terms with beauty blenders and would maybe try that one.

Great review, Pam. I skipped this because I'm not a fan of matte foundation and I've read way more negative than positive reviews.

The claims matte and hydrating would suck me in, but as my skin type is similar to yours I don't think it would agree with me.

The same here in Germany, always not ALL the shades available like in the US :( really disappointing! :D I tried it out in the drugstore, but since I saw that the coverage isn't strong enough for me (especially if I'm having a long day and heading from office to meet my friends) I didn't try it out (Although I have two samples here left over...). Nevertheless it looks really beautiful on your skin, I think your skin is so flawless and looks hydrated and healthy :)

Such a wonderful review dear! ^^
ReplyDeleteI do t think I would get on with this at all! I only really ever buy mascara from Maybelline, haven't tried much from their other products! Revlon CllourStay is also a great drugstore foundation if you're looking coverage and matte skin!

That's too bad it doesn't last on the skin very long. Thanks for the review, Pam! I was thinking of trying this one out, but I think I'll hold off for now.

Good to know about this foundation. We don't have this exact formula in stores here, but I have seen something similar. I think that applicator is such a nice idea, but it's too bad it doesn't last too long.

Sounds like this wouldn't be great for me, as I need fuller coverage and am oily/combo, so it would get patchy fast. Thanks for the honest review! x

I'm so glad that you've reviewed this Pam! I was going to pick this up this week, in the hope that it would be like the L’Oréal Infallible foundation (just a little more Spring appropriate) - as I'm obsessed with that one. But I won't be getting it now, as I have combination skin too and I need those long wearing foundations. I definitely like drugstore foundations though, as I think that some of them are just as good, if not better than high-end ones that I've tried.
