The blogging world has gone absolutely mad with the arrival of autumn. From fall fashion hauls to berry themed make-up tutorials, autumn is the blogger's dream season (apart from the lack of natural light) and rightfully so. Think of all the things we have been looking forward to this season; TV shows finally coming back, all the cosy jumpers we can wear, festivities being just around the corner - have I mentioned 78 days until Xmas?! And whilst these are great, we all know fall also brings heavy rainfall, cold and extremely windy weather conditions, not to be mention...germs everywhere. That's right, fall brings a sudden rise to the number of sick people, suffering with a cold or the flu, and if you're sitting in an extremely packed tube every day like myself, your odds of not getting sick are not looking good. Which is why I thought on today's post I'd bring a few health tips proven to boost your immune system during the colder months. I'm no expert, but I did some research and I hope you find these helpful!
VITAMIN C
An obvious one but Vitamin C is particularly important. It helps increase the activity of immune cells and antibodies, so making sure your Vitamin C levels are topped up is a must. Vitamin C-rich foods include bell peppers, dark leafy greens, broccoli, berries, citrus fruits and tomatoes, and apart from having a varied and Vitamin C-rich diet you may also consider taking a supplement.
OMEGA 3S
OMEGA 3S
Fish oil helps with inflammations and protects the lungs from colds and respiratory infections. This is found in salmon, mackerel and herring and you should aim to eat oily fish around three times a week. Just like Vitamin C though, you can always go for a supplement.
GARLIC & GINGER
Garlic is high in sulphur compound, believed to bring health benefits such as anti-bacterial and anti-viral effects. Which is why, eating fresh garlic boosts your system and also helps if you have already caught a cold or the flu. Similarly, ginger helps you sweat out the toxins in your body. My favourite home remedy has to be ginger and honey tea; it soothes a sore throat and makes for an effective cough suppressant.
PROBIOTICS
70% of our immune system is in the gut according to nutritionists, which is why beneficial bacteria intake is extremely important. Live yogurt and fermented drinks (anyone else love Yakult?) is a great start, but supplements are also available.
VITAMIN D
Get out, enjoy the sunshine and soak up on much needed immune system boosting Vitamin D. I know the UK is rather grey in the autumn and winter, but we do have the occasional sunny days here and there so make sure you take advantage of those. Fresh air and sunlight can also help reduce stress and put you in a better mood, which are great bonuses!
HAND SANITISERS
I honestly cannot live without these and you too should always keep one in your handbag! These gels contain alcohol in order to kill the germs present on the skin and work immediately and effectively at killing bacteria and most viruses. Especially useful if you take public transport.

ReplyDeleteGreat tips, I have probiotics in Bio Yougurts all the year as they are always good for the intestine but to prevent germs apart of hand sanitisers that they really dry my hands, I use the nasal spray first defence or Boots generic, it really works for me, mainly before getting in a plane which is a closed Area with Many people and so easy to catch something, The spray traps the germs and they don't get to the lungs, since I use it I get less colds. I also have a flu jab every year, that's the best thing to prevent flu, I don't want to be very ill at Xmas, it happened once, since then I always have the flu jab :)
ReplyDeleteThose are my tips ;)

I'm pretty lucky to live in a country whose climate is rather constant, but when I do feel a flu coming about, I cannot live without my Vitamin Cs and Fish Oil tablets!

My husband and my boy always fall sick together but strangely I never do whenever they are ill. I do take lots supplements, maybe that's the reason why I don't fall sick as often.

Hard to believe we only have 78 days till christmas. I work very closely with kids so I tend to get colds very often even though I sanitize a lot. Great tips Pam.

Perfect. Just what I needed. Health tips that I can save lol. I've been drinking vitamin C and taking cod liver oil religiously every morning in order to boost my immune system, but I defo need to add others on that list to the equation.

I have a tip that I discovered myself... If you feel like you're getting a sore or scratchy throat, just gargle with mouthwash. I think that it kills the bad bacteria and so most of the time this works :)

It's true, dear Pam, every year is the same - autumn arrives, then the Blogosphere goes mad, yes. Summer arrives, the same thing. And about colds, you are so right! Vitamin C, Vitamin D, supplements... I am such a fussy eater, I lack all possible vitamins you can imagine... so one of my resolutions for 2017 is to eat in a better way... in 2012 I caught 6 colds, every 2 months a new one! I don't want that anymore! Hope you have a great weekend!

Fall is the worst haha! I really am not a fan, well only when I can just stay inside and don't ever have to leave the warm comforts of my home. But I just try to eat well, stay healthy and in shape. I really don't do anything differently from what I'd do in the Summer

Thanks for sharing these helpful tips, Pam! Hand sanitisers are a must all year round, right? ;) Plus, they come in such cute presentations nowadays, hehe. I didn't know that garlic and ginger were good to avoid a cold, so I just learnt something new!

Great tips. I already have a few of these down and I'm going away next week, so I'll luckily be saying hello to some much needed Vitamin D... I have a few hand sanitisers round the house but I really need to get back into the habit of taking them around with me in my handbag!
