Would You Pay £300+ For A Designer T-shirt?

A recent article by Sheerluxe drew my attention and got me thinking about designer shopping habits, which inspired me for this post. They mention how designer t-shirts are a hot commodity at the minute, and the reason behind the huge trend is loud logos. Fendi, Gucci, Balmain, Versace, Calvin Klein, amongst many others well-known designer brands, are taking advantage of their labeling and plastering them all over a variety of their pieces. And I get it why they're doing it; if you're going to spend big bucks on a designer piece you want it to be seen and big logos are very effective in doing just that. In terms of T-shirts, Gucci comes to mind as THE brand of the moment; we've all seen blogger babes and Insta stars styling the look online. Gucci is giving shoppers who look for entry-level price points a somewhat cheaper piece to own, but still, would you fork out an eye-watering £300+ on a cotton tee?

When I say £300+, I really mean £370 for a Gucci t-shirt, in its simplest style. Heavily embroidered designs from both Gucci and Dior can go for up to £650 according to Sheerluxe, and to me, that is just madness yet they always seem to sell out as soon as new stock is released in both stores and online. These t-shirt styles have now been alternatively done by so many different high street shops, I really don't see the need for such a huge dent in my bank account. Besides, being such an expensive purchase you'd need to take really good care of it; I know I'd be paranoid about washing it myself (and having to send it off to the dry cleaners would just add to the bill), spilling something on it, pulling a thread...and let's be honest, it just isn't worth it at all.

Paying anything over 30 bucks on a tee is really pushing fashion to the limit and if I'm going to invest in something from such a well-known brand, I'm going to be looking for more substantial pieces to splash out cash on like a Gucci bag, Fendi shoes or a Burberry trench. Which is exactly what I did when I chose my Gucci bag. I could have gone for a cheaper and smaller bag, but I knew that if I (the family and hubby) were spending that much money it had to be something of value to me, something that I'd wear all the time, versatile and long-lasting. A small bag with the famous GG logo just for the sake of it wouldn't cut it, and nor does a T-shirt. Heck, I could buy 30 T-shirts or more for that amount, but like it or not, some shoppers just want that flashing logo craving satisfied. So if your budget is tight but you're still planning on a getting a designer tee, at least make it a good one (and do care for it as you may not buy a new T-shirt for a very long while). I'm perfectly happy with my Levis tee for which I paid 15 bucks; it's great quality cotton and it looks just as good.

  6. You look so cool in this outfit, Pam! If I had tons of money I'd pay that much for a designer tee but in this life I don't think that's going to happen xDDD As long as I can feel that the cotton of the t-shirt is good quality, I'm happy with it, doesn't matter the brand :) And yes, Gucci has been indeed invading the streetstyle with thier logo t-shirt! :o

  9. Loved your T-shirt now, dear Pam, and coat! You always look super sweet and beautiful! There was a time when I was very stupid (I say that about myself, I respect who thinks in a different way, of course) and I would pay even more for a T-shirt or anything else. But as I said, that was a time when I was more stupid than today. People pay for the brand, for the status. It doesn't represent anything to me these days, but in the past I was such an idiot :) Hope you have a great day!

  16. I agree, I'd rather spend on items that are investments rather than a t-shirt! Great pictures too!

  17. As a minimalist, I don't see myself spending so much money on material things, especially if it's just a shirt! I'll probably spend that much if part of the sales will be donated to a charity or an NGO. I won't also pay for something made from animals or something with animal ingredients because I don't want to pay for cruelty.
