Maybelline mascaras are my favourite among drugstore and high-end options. I have tried my fair share of the newer releases they have put out and if you have read my blog once or twice, you will know that their Lash Sensational mascara is my favourite of all time. I did try their Falsies Push Up Drama mascara a few months ago (read my review here) and despite really liking it now I don't think anything has come close to the Lash Sensational. Which is why when I spotted its new black packaging cousin, I was super excited to try it. The Lash Sensational Luscious contains an oil blend claiming to yield softer and denser lashes, and after trying it for a week or so I'm ready to share my opinion with you guys!
I already did a full review of the original (as well as its waterproof counterpart) so I won't be repeating myself too much and instead, you can read the in-depth review here. But for the sake of comparison, the original claims to reveal layers of lashes, capturing so even the tiniest lashes for a layered, multiplied lash look. The Luscious one, on the other hand, "infused with precious oils for softer, denser lashes has an exclusive fanning brush with ten layers of bristles to reveal layers of lashes for a full-fan effect". Sounds promising right? Let's find out!
When I opened the new version for the first time I have to say, I was quite disappointed. What made me LOVE the original was its wand and you can see how different the two versions now are below. The curved wand in the first-born worked well with its rather wet formula and I love how I could fit my lashes in between with ease. As a result, my lashes were always left clump free, maximised and looking fuller than ever. Even so, I proceeded to try the Luscious and as it turns out, I needn't have worried one tiny bit about its newly designed wand.
The fanning brush reaches from the longest to the smallest of lashes volumising every layer and filling the lash line instantly, saving me having to apply eyeliner to finish the look. From the get go my lashes looked amazing with just one coat but it doesn't stop there. The formula doesn't clump or need multiple coats and that is what really sells a mascara to me. Application is easy and the result is long individual lashes with some volume, with only very minor flaking throughout the day; exactly what I need for 10 hours of work every day. I say some volume is given because I didn't find I got much with this as it's not that buildable. Having said that, I'm quite happy with going for two coats as my lashes are left looking lengthened. I wouldn't recommend any more than two coats because lashes can get quite spidery and I'm not a fan.

Another selling point for mascara for me personally is how easy I can remove it, so as you can imagine I try to avoid waterproof ones at all costs. The Lash Sensational Luscious is washable and removal couldn't be easier. This is a "tubing" mascara formula - the kind that melts down in warm water (with help from a makeup remover). I've read a few reviews here and there and some people found this sort of removal easier, others not so much. But, something everyone is going to love? The formula is fragrance-free, which is particularly good news for those with sensitive eyes.
Now onto the burning question; is this better than the original version of Lash Sensational? Well, there certainly are pros and cons to it (as with any product). If lengthened lashes is your end goal and you don't mind very occasional flaking, then definitely give this a try. I'd rank it as a respectable but not flawless mascara. I won't be trading my Lash Sensational for this but will quite nicely get use out of both. I would even repurchase so whilst it may not be Maybelline's best efforts, it's close and I'm glad I have picked it up.
The Maybelline Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara retails for £7.99, but its introductory price is £5.99 at Boots, so do check it out here.
