3 Mistakes You Are Probably Making When Applying Mascara

Apart from looking like a mad woman with my eyes (and mouth) wide open when applying it, I am guilty of a few common mistakes we probably all make when it comes to applying the one product we love the most, mascara! You will agree with me that mascara pulls everything together. It can hide dodgy eyeliner (I’m certainly guilty of those), it can make you look more awake, it can give the look a more dramatic finish and we honestly can't get enough of it! With the hundreds of mascaras I've got sitting on my vanity table, I am guilty of making these mistakes with every single one of them. When I recently learned about these mistakes I decided to bring them to the blog and help out a fellow blogger/reader. So here goes, 3 mistakes you are probably making when applying mascara.

1. PUMPING THE WAND
It's like a bad habit that you can't quit but putting a stop to it is a must! The train of thought in my head for pumping the wand in and out of the tube was that the wand would become soaked with the product, but wrong. By pumping the mascara endlessly like I did, all I was doing was trapping air and bacteria inside the tube (nasty stuff), which ruins the product making it dry out faster and start smelling funkier than usual. The key is to softly twist the wand, pulling it slowly from the tube as this will not only prevent your mascara from drying out as quickly as it did before but also it will uniformly distribute the product, guaranteeing a smoother application.

2. NOT ENOUGH WIGGLING
I had seen multiple YouTubers talk about wiggling the wand for maximised volume but I had never paid much attention myself until I did my research and it turns out wiggling your wand is the BEST way to apply your mascara. If you simply pull your mascara wand straight to your lashes, chances are the result will be uneven and your roots will be completely untouched. By doing zigzag shapes as you move up on your lashes, not only are you achieving maximised length and volume, you can also save on the fake lashes!

3. NOT TREATING YOUR EYES RIGHT
Let's break this down into two parts:

i) Ask yourself this simple question: how long has that mascara been sitting there? Mascara has a life span of 3-6 month max; one of the shortest life span of all make-up due to the risk of transferring bacteria back and forth from your eyes into the mascara tube. In fact, products that go around the sensitive eye area (like eyeliner) have the shortest duration so it’s a good idea to toss anything that has been sitting there for a while. Anything to avoid a potential eye infection, am I right?!

ii) Another question for you: are you taking your make-up off correctly? I know removal of make-up is a pain in the butt, especially at night when you're tired and all you want is to catch some zzzzs. But, we must remind ourselves of how sensitive our eyes are and any harsh/incorrect removal can harm the skin around the eyes as well as cause lash loss. When removing mascara (particularly waterproof), it is ideal to soak a cotton pad in micellar cleansing water and hold it against the lashes for a few seconds before, and I stress, gently sweeping the product away. This will melt away the mascara, avoiding the need to rub the delicate eye area.

What do you think of these tips? I'd love to hear your opinion so let me know below!
Thanks for reading beauties and wishing us all a happy weekend!

  7. I started wiggling my mascara too, it's the best way to equally coat my pathetic lashes. And these days I am more patent with removing my eye makeup, always soak two cotton pads with micellar water, gently place one on each eye, let it soak for about 30 seconds before gently remove my mascara and eye makeup. Also always use my ring fingers to massage areas around my eyes as it's the weakest finger.

  8. I agree with you, dear Pam, it's true that we make mistakes when applying mascaras. Too old ones, rubbing the eyes when removing mascara... I liked the tip, to press the cotton with micellar water, then gently remove the mascara... will do it always, now! Hope you have a great weekend!

  9. I use to be so guilty of pumping the wand not realising I was drying up the mascara faster. Thankfully I learned that tip a while back and now I don't do it anymore. Great post lovely x

  14. What is it about mascaras that have us applying it with our mouths hanging open. Too funny. I did hear Tyra talk about the pumping back when her show was still on and it made a lot of sense. I'm not an avid mascara user cos I wear falsies most of the time but it was great info. So are these.
