Red Lips: My Top 5 Picks For The Festive Season

Red can be a tough colour to wear, especially lipstick! If you're not careful enough one moment it's on your lips the next it's smeared all over your face, nose and chin. But, you will agree with me that there is not a more fitting time to wear red than at Chrismas time. Red may be the colour of energy and passion, but there is something about it that makes perfectly festive too. When it comes down to picking the right shade, the secret is to find one that works with your colouring, from skin undertones to hair and even eye colour. Blue-toned reds look more retro and cool whilst orange reds (which are not a big favourite of mine) look warmer and more modern. And of course, we cannot leave out the berry red shades which are just perfect for the winter. Whether you're a beauty pro or a make-up novice if you want to update your look for the festive season why not try a killer red lip? Here are my current top 5 red lipsticks!

From left to right:

Nu Skin Replenishing Lipstick Cha Cha Red* | £17.27
Not particularly pretty from the outside but the bullet is everything you wish for! This lipstick provides rich, non-feathering colour and added protection thanks to its antioxidants and tissue-nurturing ingredients. The texture is light and incredibly moisturising; the lasting power isn't as great as a matte option but this isn't a major drawbacks for me.

Sleek Matte Me Lip Gloss Rioja Red | £4.99
I reviewed this here (one of my ever popular posts even 2 years later!) and what can I say, this red is everything you look for in a matte lip cream. Application is smooth as it goes on evenly and not patchy or streaky, and the finish isn't shiny nor sticky. It is a little drying after you've worn it for a long period of time but this is one of the most long lasting of this bunch so definitely a great option for Christmas dinner time.

KIKO Smart Lipstick 908 True Red | £3.90
The most affordable and one of my favourites; what can I say I don't need to spend too much to be content. The shade is very similar to Sleek as well as Ruby Woo but the finish is deliciously nourishing! The soft consistency does make application a little harder, but the result is the amazing feeling of comfort. Unlike Cha Cha Red, despite being a satin finish this is rather long lasting and I can go about 6 hours without reapplying. You don't have to spend a fortune on a red lippie, especially if you're only going to be wearing it over Christmas. Definitely give this a try!

MAC Retro Matte Ruby Woo | £15.50
If you're looking to splurge a little why not try the ultimate red colour, the very famous Ruby Woo. Pair it with the MAC Cherry lip liner and you've got yourself a stunning combination that is going to last all day without the need of reapplication. This is an example of a blue toned red lipstick which makes it perfectly retro (hence its name); pair it with a fierce feline flick and your make-up look is on point!

NYX Matte Lipstick Alabama | £6.50
If you love matte but non-drying formulas, just like me, then NYX Alabama Matte Lipstick is definitely one to try. The shade is a brick red done right and the texture does not weigh down the lips. It is highly pigmented and long-wearing, and I love how the formula glides on smoothly, doesn't bleed into fine lines and stays put with a non-drying matte finish; a must in your collection!

Tell me, what are your favourite red shades? Will you be wearing red for Christmas? Let me know below!
Thanks for reading beauties and wishing us all a nice weekend ahead!
